A biannual print magazine and online platform that documented visual art, music, and food culture within contemporary LA life. The publication began in 2012 and released 4 print issues over the course of 2 years.
VIA was run by an editorial and design team of six women who developed the publication beyond a print magazine and into a programming space that connected artists, makers, curators, and programmers across the US.
Each issue was collectively curated on a submission based editorial process + internal contributions.
The project continued to collaborate with a variety of forward thinkers, organizations, and institutions such as LACMA, MOCA, the ACE hotel, INSIDE / WITHIN, LA Art Book Fair, and Adjunct Positions.
Candor Arts was started in 2015 by Matt Austin and Ally Hasche as a publishing project and online store that sells print material and objects.
Candor was named after the ethos of the project; to be open and honest in expression. We have published a variety of projects including 'Moonwork' by A-lan Holt, 'Wind Through Quiet Tensions' by Adam Grossi, and 'How to Make a Hood' curated by La Keisha Leek. The projects range from artists books to literature collections to memoirs, which follow the processes involved with working through personal and cultural struggle to explore oneself and contribute positively to society in finding answers.
Matt Austin oversees the publishing and bookmaking of each project. All first editions are handmade and crafted in collaboration with the author.
Candor runs a small online objects store called Candor Goods that is curated by Ally Hasche, and highlights a variety of makers who excel in their craft. Candor has done a variety of pop up stores at venues/events like Medium Cool and In House. We carry a line of our own designed notebooks and boxes.
Candor also provides a variety of print services including custom notebooks, self published projects, and other casegoods.
